Navigating KDP’s DRM Rules: What Indie Authors Need to Know
Our previous post explored how authors can leverage wide eBook distribution platforms to reach a larger audience. Authors who still use KDP, however, should know about their recent DRM policy updates. Understanding how KDP’s DRM options impact reader flexibility and book security on Amazon is essential for managing a modern publishing career.
What Is DRM?
DRM stands for “Digital Rights Management.” It’s intended to help limit unauthorized access to digital files. It provides a decent barrier against casual copying and sharing. Emphasis on “casual.”
No security protocol is entirely effective. DRM can be relatively easy to strip away or maneuver around, so it doesn’t do much against serious pirates. It does require additional steps to crack it, however, which can help prevent normal people from effortlessly copying and sharing the file. Because of that, many stores still use DRM to help lock in their digital products.
KDP’s Policy Shift: DRM-Free EPUB and PDF Downloads
KDP’s policy update mainly focuses on what happens when an author chooses to opt out of DRM. Previously, going “DRM-free” simply meant Amazon wouldn’t encrypt the file. Now, Amazon is actively facilitating cross-platform sharing, allowing for more freedom.
Verified purchasers of DRM-free Kindle eBooks can download EPUB and PDF versions of the book, allowing them to read the files on non-Kindle devices and apps. This download option doesn’t extend to Kindle Unlimited or library-style borrows—only to those who buy the eBook
For DRM-free eBooks published prior to December 9, 2025, Amazon won’t automatically expose the EPUB/PDF download buttons to your buyers; not unless you confirm that choice via your account.
For authors uploading new eBooks to KDP, you can choose your DRM setting during upload.

Should You Enable DRM on KDP?
For indie authors, this change presents a strategic crossroads.
Choosing to apply DRM: If you select this option, your Kindle eBook will remain locked within the Amazon ecosystem. Readers (who don’t crack the DRM) will need to use a Kindle device or the official Kindle app to read your eBook.
Choosing not to apply DRM: Opting out provides ultimate flexibility to your readers, which can be perceived as greater value. However, because Amazon could then offer the purchaser an unencrypted EPUB or PDF file, the barrier to unauthorized distribution drops.
If your main focus is being as accessible as possible, you aren’t concerned with unauthorized file sharing, and your Amazon target audience values flexibility, going DRM-free can be a good move.
If you are protective of your digital assets, you want more control over your files, and your Amazon target audience favors Kindle apps/devices anyway (and why wouldn’t they, if they’re purchasing the eBook from Amazon), enabling DRM may be the way to go for you.
Quite frankly, if flexibility is your concern, you should consider distributing the eBook to platforms such as IngramSpark to reach other retailers outside of Amazon. Then, your readers can purchase and download the eBook from their preferred vendor.
Pro Tip: You can run a poll via your website, newsletter, and social media to learn more about your audience’s reading habits and thoughts on DRM.
Navigating the DRM Dilemma
Weighing reader freedom against file security can feel overwhelming, but that’s just one part of launching a successful eBook.
