Master Your Manuscript: How Indie Authors Can Leverage AI for Plotting and Outlining
Writing is a massive undertaking, and even seasoned authors admit the process is daunting. We all struggle with the same heavy lifting: building a coherent story structure, juggling complex character arcs, and weeding out plot holes while keeping track of every tiny detail.
But what if you could offload at least some of that heavy lifting?
For authors open to integrating new technology, Artificial Intelligence can be a powerful assistant—not a replacement for creativity, but a powerful tool for plotting and outlining your next masterpiece. By using AI to optimize the early stages of the writing process, you free up more time for the actual writing—and for the creative decisions only you can make.
If you are ready to learn how to leverage AI tools to build stronger stories without relinquishing your creativity, let’s dive in.
Ignite Your Imagination: Brainstorming and Idea Generation
Need help crafting a language system, exploring potential plot points, determining the validity or potential interest of an idea, or finding parallels between historical eras?
Artificial Intelligence can rapidly generate multiple ideas based on your prompts. The more specific your prompts are, the more targeted the output will become. The best part is that in most cases, AI will even follow up its answers with questions that could take you down new avenues of thought you hadn’t considered yet.
Think of AI as a tireless brainstorming partner who doesn’t get annoyed by a never-ending stream of questions—or those weird ideas you get at 3 a.m. and just have to hash out.
Strengthen the Backbone: Structure, Pacing, and Plot Holes
Many authors struggle with pacing and ensuring every plot point serves the larger story. This is one area the objectivity of Artificial Intelligence shines.
How AI Improves Structural Integrity
For fiction authors: AI can polish your manuscript’s blueprint by mapping out traditional story structures and suggesting where key events would most logically fall. It can even analyze your existing ideas and highlight potential plot holes or underdeveloped subplots.
For nonfiction authors: AI can make suggestions to improve the presentation and order of ideas or information, as well as suggest further information you could add (and where) to better serve your readers.
Master the Details: Character Arcs, World-Building, and Facts
Keeping track of character backstories, motivations, and the intricate details of your fictional world can become overwhelming. Similarly, nonfiction authors can struggle to retain and refer back to information. AI acts like an organized virtual assistant, ensuring all your key facts remain consistent.
AI’s Role in Detail Management
For fiction and series authors: Use AI to build detailed character profiles, track relationships, and maintain a consistent knowledge base of your world’s lore. This is invaluable for preventing continuity errors.
For nonfiction authors: Artificial Intelligence can assist with keeping terminology, dates, and other facts straight. It can also help you manage and track your resources and citations.
The Author’s Toolkit: Choosing the Right AI Platform
When considering their AI partner, authors typically look at two categories of tools:
General-purpose AIs: Platforms like ChatGPT and Google Gemini are excellent for early-stage work such as brainstorming, idea generation, summarizing complex concepts, and asking “what if” questions.
Targeted Writing Assistants: These platforms are built specifically for writers. Popular options like Novelcrafter and Sudowrite offer features tailored to outlining, among other applications.
You should test out various AI platforms to see what works best for you.
Important note on usage: When exploring any Artificial Intelligence platform, be sure to carefully read the terms and conditions and the privacy policies before inputting your proprietary ideas or manuscript drafts.
The Human Touch: Balancing AI with Professional Expertise
By embracing Artificial Intelligence for plotting and outlining, you empower yourself to build stronger, more coherent stories.
Just remember: AI can be a wonderful tool, but that’s all it is. Despite many authors’ fears, AI is best used to augment your own creativity and genius, not replace it. AI still makes mistakes and it doesn’t always grasp the nuances that humans understand and resonate with.
Similarly, Artificial Intelligence is not a suitable replacement for the years of experience human professionals, such as expert editors, can bring to the table. AI can help with many tasks during the drafting process, but it has limitations.
Once you have your first draft ready, you should seek out a human editor to review, fine-tune it, and ensure the manuscript is as polished and error-free as possible before it’s sent to the typesetter. These additional steps (with qualified humans) are essential for creating a professional, high-quality product that other humans will enjoy.

Exactly: AI is a tool, not a replacement.
BTW, the 3 a.m. ideas are real, LOL. When you don't have a human to hash ideas out with, AI can be extremely helpful. When I get stuck on an idea and either need to reframe it or conduct more research, AI helps me explore other approaches and find the information I need.
I wouldn't ever use AI to create my story (creating is the fun part!), but it's definitely a helpful little assistant. As far as I'm concerned, AI is here now and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere, so we may as well learn how to use it responsibly to serve us and improve our workflow.
